There are so many different varieties of breads available in the grocery markets today, but truly
great bread comes from baking it yourself. Baking bread is increasing in its popularity in the last
few years. People are getting back into the habit of cooking and baking for their families once
again. Did you know that baking bread instead of buying it in the stores can save you up to $35.00
per month and it is much healthier as well?
Some store-bought breads contain additives which have a chemical nature and sweeteners and
preservatives which are not healthy for you. By making your own whole wheat breads, you can
assure yourself and your family that you are truly getting the full benefits of whole wheat breads.
Whole wheat labeled breads that are found in popular grocery chains are sometimes not even
whole wheat varieties. Some are actually white bread that has been tinted using a caramel
coloring.
Every ingredient that is added into your own home-baked breads gives you peace of mind in
knowing that harmful additives have not been added. Also, breads baked from scratch taste much
better and have more flavor than store bought types.
Walking into a home that has the aroma of fresh bread is one of the most popular scents to make
everyone feel at home. There are so many quick-bread recipes available today that baking bread is
much easier than it used to be. Bringing a nice warm loaf of home baked bread to any gathering is
sure to please everyone and is certainly a nice comfort food.
Home-baked breads are popular and traditional for many different occasions. Greek Easter Bread
is traditionally baked with a red egg inside and braided for a beautiful presentation. Traditional
yeast bread is relatively quick and easy to bake as the yeast does most of the work. Italian
Focaccia Bread is a flavorful alternative to garlic bread and contains flavorful herbs making it
perfect for dipping.

According to Hindu scriptures, “Everything is food, but bread is the great mother.” Throughout the
ages, its status as the most fundamental of fare has been celebrated by countless worshippers,
writers and thinkers. Bread is almost a synonym for civilized sustenance.
Not the least of its virtues is variety. Most people think of bread simply as a dough made of wheat
flour and water and baked in an oven. The fact is that bread can be based on any of a multitude of
flours other than wheat. It can be spiced or sweetened, enriched, flavored or filled. Loaves and
rolls may be unleavened and pancake flat, or lightened by baking soda or baking powder instead
of the usual leavening, yeast. Some breads are cooked on a griddle, some are deep fried. Bagels
are poached before baking.
The range of home baked breads includes cakelike French brioche, chewy Mexican tortillas, dense
German pumpernickel, flaky Danish pastries, plump English crumpets and paper thin Indian
chappatis- to mention only a few of the possibilities.
There are breads that are made for breakfast- pancakes, waffles and doughnuts- and Parker
House or cloverleaf rolls for dinner. Middle Eastern pita breads provide pockets that can be stuffed
with fillings; Scotland’s black bun is a yeasty fruitcake enclosed in a wrapping of plain bread.
This bread site is a guide to the preparation of bread in all of its guises. It begins with the basics-
an explanation of flours, yeasts and step by step instructions of how to mix, knead, shape and
bake simple, yeast leavened loaves and rolls. We also tell you how to embellish yeast dough with
butter and eggs or with flavorings and special handling methods. Finally, we explain the wide
variety of breads that can be made without yeast. All these lessons will enable you to use and
prepare recipes that span many centuries and lands.
